A survey of owners of new tractors was conducted in the Ludhiana district of Punjab. Results showed that farmers with an operational land holding <=12 ha preferred tractors <=35 hp. Approx. half of the tractors purchased by the farmers surveyed were 35 hp. Farmers with smaller operations attached more importance to maintenance costs, initial cost and fuel efficiency when purchasing a new tractor. Larger-scale farmers chose on the basis of resale value, after sales service, hp, spare parts availability and ease of repair.
