The specific objectives of the study, which was carried out in three villages from Ludhiana block and three blocks of Bhai Randhir Singh Nagar of Ludhiana city, were: (1) to compare the household expenditure patterns of families with working and non-working wives; and (2) to examine the relationship between income and expenditure patterns of each family type. It was found that the expenditure pattern showed a high degree of association with the employment position of wives. In rural areas, families with employed wives spent more money on education and clothing than families with unemployed wives who spent more on ceremonies and alcohol.
