Effect of garlic extract on in vitro uptake of Ca2+ and HPO4 (2-) by matrix of sheep aorta

A collagen and elastin matrix was prepared from sheep aorta by extraction with Na2HPO4 solution and the effect of garlic extract on the uptake of calcium and phosphate ions was studied. Addition of 1 ml garlic extract (equivalent to 0.25 g garlic bulbs) to the system completely inhibited the uptake of Ca2+ and HPO42- when incubated for 4 h. Increasing garlic extract from 0.2 to 1.0 ml decreased the uptake of the ions proportionately. Ingestion of fresh garlic may decrease calcification of the aorta which occurs in atherosclerosis.
