Two 16-week-old squirrels (Sciurus vulgaris) and three 24-week-old muskrats (Ondatra zibethica) were subcutaneously infected with a dose of 400 SMicLD50s of the extraneurally passaged strain 236 of Tahyna virus, an arbovirus transmitted in nature by Aedes mosquitoes. Viraemia was detected in 1 squirrel (48 and 96 h after being infected) and in 2 muskrats (24 and 48 h after infection). Seroconversion was demonstrated by the plaque-reduction neutralization test 21 days after infection in all animals. The values of viraemia found in the present investigation were so low that they would not be sufficient to infect the vector. Further studies are considered necessary to rule out a role for both rodents in the circulation of Tahyna virus in nature.
