Managers of urban forests may want to improve habitat for gray squirrels (S. carolinensis) where more are desired, or to reduce habitat quality where squirrels are a nuisance. Habitat characteristics that are desirable for either purpose were determined by trapping and line-transect censusing squirrels on a 276-acre tract that resembles an urban park. These findings and related information support 5 habitat management procedures for increasing and 4 procedures for decreasing populations of gray squirrels.
