Weights of adults average 19 ounces; the sex ratio is approximately equal; tree cavities are preferred for wintering and for sheltering the young; leaf nests are chiefly used for more temporary purposes; average number in a litter, 4; there is probably a 5-yr. cycle in the gray squirrel population; more than 300,000 of the animals are killed by hunters annually in 22 unglaciated counties of Ohio. Management recommendations are made.
