California serogroup virus infection in a horse with encephalitis

A yearling stallion with acute encephalitis was positive for antibody to the snowshoe hare serotype of the California serogroup in haemaglutination-inhibition, complement fixation and neutralization tests. No antibodies were detected to equine encephalomyelitis, Powasan, St. Louis encephalitis or Cache Valley viruses. The horse recovered uneventfully within one week. Clinical disease in horses associated with the California serogroup has not been described.
