Trypanosoma evansi infection in pigs in India

In January 1984, 13 pigs died on the government farm in Kharar, Punjab, after showing signs of fever, shivering, laboured breathing, necrosis of the tips of the ears and tail, oedema of the eyelids, and emaciation. Trypanosoma evansi was identified in blood samples from 8 pigs with similar symptoms, and by mouse inoculation in 7 of 10 pigs whose blood smears were negative for trypanosomes. Infected pigs were treated with quinapyramine sulphate and also for sarcoptic mange with ivermectin. It is suggested that mange also found in these pigs may have had an immunosuppressive effect, as pigs usually have a low susceptibility to T. evansi.
