Does folic acid exert a provocative action on the EEG of epileptic patients? A preliminary report

Aim of this study is to find-out whether folic acid exerts any provocative action on the EEG of epileptic patients under treatment as compared to nontreated patients and whether the acute administration of a single i.v. dose, during continuous EEG monitoring, could be used as a reliable screening test for a preventive identification of those patients sensitive to the epileptogenic effects of chronic folic acid therapy. Our preliminary data confirm the presence of an epileptogenic effects of folic acid. This effect is exerted on a low percentage of patients, may give early changes on the EEG thus allowing to prevent the exposure of patients to the dangerous side effects of folate therapy.
