An experimental tumor model, the Lewis lung carcinoma (3LL), was adopted to study the dynamics of tumor cell spread from both qualitative and quantitative point of view. Classical cytological staining techniques (i.e. May Grunwald Glemsa and ematoxilin eosin) were adopted to investigate tissue specimens, carcinoma and lung sections, and peripheral blood smears from the 3rd to the 14th day after the carcinoma grafting. Statistical methods were used to fit the quantitative measurements to Liotta's probabilistic model of metastasis formation. Undoubtedly a very complex path leads to this event but, from an euristic point-of-view, we can consider this phenomenon as a stochastic population balance where the "chance" can be computed depending upon kinetics parameters experimentally evaluated.
