100 newborn buffalo calves from 3 villages in north-eastern Thailand were divided equally into treatment and control groups. Treated calves were given a 2:1 mixture (w/w) of piperazine citrate (196 mg/kg body weight) and thiabendazole (50 mg/kg) at 3 and 10 weeks of age. Control calves were given a placebo at the same times. All the calves were reared by traditional methods and their faeces were examined for helminth ova (Toxocara vitulorum and Strongyloides papillosus) at 3, 10 and 16 weeks of age. 4 treated and 7 control calves died during the test period; 9 control calves were treated for acute enteritis associated with high egg counts. At the end of the trials there was no difference in weight gains between experimental and control calves but the combined morbidity/mortality rate was reduced from 32 to 10%.
