Preliminary study on the use of thiabendazole in the control of common toxigenic fungi in grain feed

The antifungal effect of thiabendazole , varied from complete suppression to different degrees of growth inhibition. F. tricinctum was the most sensitive F. spp., followed by F. sporotrichioides, G. fujikuroi and G. zeae. A concn of 1:20 000 of tiabendazole suspension (50 micro g/ml) was fungicidal to F. tricinctum and F. sporotrichioides. A. flavus and A. parasiticus required a higher concn, 1:10 000 (100 micro g/ml) of tiabendazole to kill their spores. Immersion of feed samples in tiabendazole at a concn of 1:10 000 (100 micro g/ml) for 4 d at room temp. resulted in elimination of the toxinogenic fungal flora. Tiabendazole at a concn of 1:10 000 completely inhibited biosynthesis of T-2 toxin, whereas aflatoxin B1 production was reduced by 93%. It is concluded that treatment of cereal grains with tiabendazole before storage may be the practical approach for the control of grain mould damage and common mycotoxins in grain feed.
