330 carcasses of slaughtered swine of different breeds were examined to determine the nature of the typical layers of backfat, recording their dimensions and proportions at three standardized anatomical locations. Histological preparations were used to evaluate the thickness of the typical separating layer of connective tissue. The carcasses of three lean pigs, of one obese dog and of a fat cat were prepared to demonstrate that this layer should be called the Fascia trunci superficialis. A similar layer which is found between the so-called inner layer of backfat and the muscle fascias, can be classified as Fascia trunci profunda. The outer layer of backfat, generally considered to be part of the subcutis, belongs to the Integumentum commune. It is discussed whether adipose tissue of the inner layer of backfat at an early stage of development can be defined as intrafascial adipose tissue before reaching the stage of interfascial adipose tissue in adult animals.
