Leucocytozoon infections in parakeets

The 5 birds affected were Cyanoramphus novaezelandiae, Eunymphicus c. cornutus, Platycercus adelaidae and two P. elegans, all from private outdoor aviaries. One P. elegans, 7-8 weeks old, came from an aviary in which four young birds had died recently. The other P. elegans was about 14 months old, from an aviary in which several birds had died within a relatively short period. The P. adelaidae had died suddenly. No history was available for the other birds. Macroscopically there were multiple wart-like protuberances under the pericardium, and histologically, numerous cysts 70-620 micro m in diameter occurring singly or in groups were found in heart and lung tissues.
