Since 1970, all psittacine birds imported into the German Federal Republic have been quarantined for 45 days and fed a grain ration medicated with a tetracycline as a preventive measure against psittacosis. During the years 1969-1983 a total of 5412 cases of psittacosis in psittacine birds were reported in the Republic. Since 1981 there has been a slight decline in the annual number of cases. From 1975 onward a similar downward trend in the number of cases of human psittacosis has been observed. In the authors' opinion the prophylactic treatment of imported psittacine birds has contributed to the reduced incidence of human psittacosis.
