Fasting plasma samples from 41 obese and 35 normal healthy women from families of comparable socio-economic status were analysed for cholesterol, triglycerides and their lipoprotein fractions. The dietary intake was approximated in the two groups, hence there was no difference in the energy (calorie) intake. However, calculated on the basis of per kg body weight, obese women were found to consume less calories mainly for carbohydrates and proteins. The levels of cholesterol in very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) were significantly higher (P < 0.001) and that in low density lipoprotein (LDL) were significantly lower (P < 0.001) in obese women. Triglycerides in plasma and its lipoprotein fractions were significantly raised in obese women. Obesity has been found to be associated with changes in lipoproteins, especially with reciprocal changes in very low and low density lipoproteins.
