The incidence of dysbacteriosis was analyzed in the duodenal contents of children infected with Giardia intestinalis, and the effect was assessed of both factors on the values of bile acids in duodenal juice and serum. The results were analyzed comparing them with those obtained in children with diarrhoea of other aetiology. In both groups growth of bacterial microflora was demonstrated in about one-third of the studied children. In the group with lambliasis a trend was observed for reduced bile acid pool (BA+) in the duodenal contents, while the serum levels of secondary bile acids were normal. Frequent occurrence of higher concentrations of conjugated bile acids was found in the serum, especially after meal stimulation. These observations may suggest hepatocellular dysfunction in lambliasis, while no evidence was observed of increased deconjugation of bile acids.
