Metabolism of bile acids in chronic diarrhoea of children

The metabolism of bile acids was studied in relation to the small intestine bacterial overgrowth, determining their levels in duodenal fluid, stools and serum in 49 children with coeliac disease and protracted diarrhoea. It was found that independently of the etiology of diarrhoea bile acids were frequently lost with stools, their synthesis, secretion into the duodenum, and their absorption was impaired. The process of their deconjugation in the duodenum was observed rarely. These results support the rationale of monitored treatment of chronic diarrhoea with cholestyramine, antibiotics and medium-chain triglycerides.
