The effect of acute inhalation of acetyaldehyde on microsomal mixed function oxidase system in the rat liver was examined. Aniline p-hydroxylase activity increased significantly while aminopyrine N-demethylase activity remained unchanged after the 7-hr inhalation of acetaldehyde. Total cytochrome P-450 content also remained unchanged. These results are similar to those found after a single administration of ethanol. It seems that acetaldehyde may be responsible for some of the changes in microsomal mixed function oxidase system associated with ethanol consumption. The specific increase in aniline hydroxylase appears to be the result of a modification of the lipophilic milieu that surrounds the cytochrome P-450 in the microsomal membrane or an induction of specific cytochrome P-450 isozyme following acetaldehyde treatment.
