CEA localization and quantity were evaluated in tissue sections from 34 cases of gastric carcinoma by means of direct immunoperoxidase. The antigen was found in adenocarcinoma and mucinous carcinoma, in the gland lumen, in the apical regions of the cytoplasma and on the latero-basal surface of the cell; whereas in signet ring carcinoma and non-differentiated carcinoma it was detected on the cellular surface and in the cytoplasma. While evaluating quantitative distribution of CEA it was observed that in 38.2% of cases it accumulated quantitiative distribution of CEA it was observed that in 38,2% of cases it accumulated in large and moderate quantities in lumen of the gland in the apical regions of the cytoplasma and on the latero-basal cellular surface, in 20,6% of cases in large and moderate quantities in the cytoplasma and on the cellular surface whereas in 41,2% of cases there only traces of CEA or no CEA at all. Large and moderate amounts of CEA occurred in 20 cases (58,8%), including 18 cases of carcinoma producing the mucus. CEA localization in the tissue by means of immunoperoxidase was also helpful in establishing carcinoma microinvasion in the gastric wall as well as localization and extension of metastases in the lymph nodes.
