Effect of urea on the penetration of prednisolone into the human skin

Urea is known to increase considerably the liberation of glucocorticoids from ointment bases as well as to be one of the most effective penetration promoters for topically applied glucocorticoids. Therefore the influence of urea on the penetration kinetics of prednisolone into the different layers of human skin was investigated. An increased penetration of prednisolone from urea containing ointments could be demonstrated in human skin. The significance of these findings for the use of prednisolone in external glucocorticoid therapy is being discussed.
