Dietary habits of patients attending an outpatient clinic for alcoholics

The dietary habits of 102 patients attending an outpatient clinic for alcoholics in Copenhagen, Denmark, were investigated by interview to assess the nutrient content. All the patients were investigated while they were sober and 26 were investigated, in addition, while intoxicated. When the patients were sober, the diet was somewhat inadequate as regards the quantities eaten and the mutual relations between the nutrient components. The intakes of vitamins and minerals were, similarly, slightly under ideal. When the patients were intoxicated, the diet was markedly inadequate as regards distribution and the content of vitamins and minerals. It must be assumed that those addicted to alcohol and who have not or have only brief periods of abstinence constitute a risk group for deficiency diseases.
