Media attention linking high cholesterol and heart disease has prompted many Americans to have their serum cholesterol concentrations measured. For those with a total cholesterol value above 200 mg/100 ml, dietary lipid-lowering treatment may be essential. Specific guidelines for helping such patients change their eating behaviour, lower their serum cholesterol values, and thus reduce the risk for coronary artery disease are given. As "team leader", the primary care physician plays a key role in educating patients and implementing treatment.
