Toxicity of comfrey-pepsin preparations

A brief communication cites the serious health risk of commercial comfrey-pepsin capsules that are sold in US herbal and health-food stores as a digestive aid. The capsules were found, on analysis, to contain hepatotoxic and potentially carcinogenic pyrrolizidine alkaloids. Cases of hepatic veno-occlusive disease produced by these capsules are cited.(wz)
