Correlation of pyocyanine & pyocin production by clinical isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa

Pyocyanine production by 170 isolates of Ps. aeruginosa was studied using the modified Franks' medium. These isolates were also typed by aeruginocin typing method using a total of 22 indicator strains. A total of 114 (67.11%) strains produced both pyocyanine and aeruginocin; 4 (2.35%) strains produced pyocyanine but not aeruginocin; 31 (18.23) strains produced aeruginocin but not pyocyanine and 21 (12.35%) strains produced neither pyocyanine nor aeruginocin. There was 79.46 per cent association between pyocyanine and aeruginocin production. Twenty one of the 25 (84.0%) non-producers of aeruginocin were non-producers of pyocyanine. Of the 118 producers of pyocyanine, 114 (96.6%) were positive for aeruginocin. Twelve or more of the 22 indicators were inhibited by 135 strains, 105 (77.77%) of which were producers of pyocyanine. Also the prevalent aeruginocin types produced stronger pyocyanine pigment (44.0%) than the rate (24.4%) and nontypable types (4.0%). The study thus reveals a correlation between the production of pyocyanine and aeruginocin. Whether these contribute to the prevalence and virulence of Ps. aeruginosa needs to be investigated.
