P. aeruginosa strains isolated in the Hospital General del Centro Medico La Raza in Mexico La Raza in Mexico City. Most of these strains were isolated from infected surgical wounds or urinary infections. A Pseudomonas infection outbreak in the Intensive Care Unit of the same hospital was investigated; 7 children were involved in the outbreak, 3 of them carried the pyocin type 783; 2 others carried a similar type. An environmental study was carried out in the Urology Unit and in the Intensive Care Unit. Pseudomonas was found on the hands of the medical staff and on some instruments, but these strains belonged to different pyocin types than those isolated from children. Antibiotic sensitivity was not related to pyocin type; 95% of the strains were resistant to polymixin and 85% were carbenicillin and choramphenicol resistant. Gentamicin was effective on 93% of the isolated strains.
