Glycoconjugate components were analyzed in the oviduct of the Rana esculenta complex under different experimental conditions. The polysaccharide extracted from frogs that had been hypophysectomized and treated with hormonal substances (cortisol, GH, LH, FSH) is a macromolecule composed of hexoses, hexosamines, fucose, uronic acids and sulphates bound to a proteic residue. Hypophysectomy caused the largest reduction in fucose and sulphates in comparison to all the other glucidic components which were also reduced. The hormonal treatments had varied and complex effects on the glucidic residues; cortisol primarily stimulated glucose synthesis, GH had a slightly positive effect on hexosamines, FSH acted on the synthesis of all carbohydrate components with the exception of uronic acids, which significantly decreased, LH had the major effect on hexosamines, while causing a decrease of uronic acids and sulphates. The qualitative and quantitative modifications of glucidic components were explained on the basis of some data relevant to the position of sugars within the glycoproteic chain.
