A total of 314 free of charge blood donors were studied. Anemia was detected in 29.3%, G-6-PDH deficiency in 15.3%, and .beta.-thalassemia carriership in 16.4% of the subjects investigated. AB/IV blood group was detected less frequently in the Azerbaijan as compared to the Russian population. The incidence rate of the negative Rh-fctor among the Azerbaijanians was lower than among the Russians (8.7% and 13.5%, respectively). The Rh- negative subjects comprised 16.1% in the .beta.-thalassemia gene carriers, in contrast to 6.6% in the focus with high incidence of the thalassemia gene. It is recommended that in the foci hyperendemic with respect to the thalassemia gene, blood donors should be selected with due regard to the hematologic factors in the population, mutant-gene carriers and thalassemia patients.
