Dependence of the duration of inhibition of the hypophyseo-adrenal cortex system on the dose of administered hydrocortisone in rats

The effect of various doses of hydrocortisone on the functioning of the hypophyseal-adrenocortical system was studied in experiments on rats. The administration of increasing amounts of hydrocortisone (at a single dose of 100 micrograms 300 micrograms/100 g twice a day for 2 days) resulted in a prolonged period of the inhibition of basal and stress factor-induced corticosterone secretion. The stress reaction of the hypophyseal-adrenocortical system changed under the influence of hydrocortisone to a lesser degree than adrenal hormone basal secretion. An increase in the amount of administered hydrocortisone demonstrated a gradual transition from physiological inhibition of the hypophyseal-adrenocortical system to pathologically prolonged inhibition similar to that known in clinical practice.
