Use of the C3b-RBC binding technic for the determination of immune complexes in patients with various pathologies

The feasibility of detecting circulating immune complexes (CIC) by their union to red blood cells (RBC) was evaluated in patients with different pathologies. In order to achieve a sensitive and reproductible technique, some modifications were made to the methods of Aikawa et al and Tsuda et al. This technique was applied to CIC detection in 15 patients with epidermoid carcinoma of the lung in stages III and IV, 8 with SLE, 15 with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, and 15 healthy subjects. The results obtained showed that CIC binding to RBC through C3b fraction of complement provides a simple and sensitive technique that can be applied to the detection of CIC of variable aetiology.
