A study conducted in Spain assessed the effects of pregnancy and seasonal climatic variations on vitamin D status by measuring serum 25-hydroxy-vitamin D (25-OHD3) levels in 32 pregnant women in March (with 10, 11, and 11 in their 1st, 2nd, and 3rd trimester, respectively) and in 45 pregnant women in September (with 14, 19, and 12 in their 1st, 2nd, and 3rd trimester, respectively) who had been match for age and for dietary Ca intake. Comparisons were made with non-pregnant women as controls (10 in March; 25 in September) after the maximum sunlight period (March) and the minimum sunlight period (September). Serum levels of 25-OHD3, relative to controls, were not affected throughout pregnancy in either March or September; however, these levels increased after winter in both groups of pregnant women.(wz)
