On the first day of pregnancy, Porton mice were whole-body X-irradiated with a dose of 500 R and/or AET (2-aminoethylisothiouronium bromide hydrobromide), MEA (cysteamine hydrochloride), or 5-HT (serotonin-creatinine sulphate) applied in a dose of 40 mg/kg of body weight. On the 19th day of gestation, the fresh weight of foetal livers and DNA content in 25 mg of fresh tissue and in the whole livers of foetuses were analysed. As compared with controls, in the remaining mice a decrease both in the liver weight of foetuses and the total amount of DNA in this organ, with the exception of DNA content in the whole liver in those treated with compounds before their X-irradiation, as well as an increase in DNA content in 25 mg of tissue, were observed. The lowest liver weight of foetuses and the smallest total amount of DNA in the liver was found in mice which had only been X-irradiated, but DNA content in 25 mg of tissue was greater in these animals than in controls and in those injected with AET and MEA. Among mice treated with compounds alone or prior to their exposure to X-rays, the lowest liver weight of foetuses, greatest DNA content in 25 mg of tissue and the smallest total amount of DNA in the foetal liver was encountered in those treated with 5-HT.
