Plasma human growth hormone (HGH), insulin levels and blood sugar levels were measured in 6 patients during trimethaphan-induced hypotension under halothane-nitrous oxide-oxygen anesthesia for neurosurgical procedures. Trimethaphan was infused at a rate of 10 to 30 .mu.g/kg/min so as to maintain the systolic blood pressure of 80 to 100 mm Hg. Plasma HGH level increased gradually and significantly during surgery reaching the highest value after the emergence from anesthesia. Plasma insulin level increased gradually during surgery reaching the highest value of significance after the emergence from anesthesia. Blood glucose level was also elevated gradually but significantly during procedure. No significant changes in plasma HGH or insulin levels were detected during trimethaphan infusion compared with the values before the infusion. However, the tendency of increase of plasma insulin level was found during trimethaphan infusion compared with the value before infusion. The authors' study suggests that the trimethaphan-induced hypotension does not affect carbohydrate metabolism significantly judging from plasma HGH and insulin levels.
