In a preliminary study in 15 pigs infected by mouth with Aujeszky's disease virus, the results of fluorescent staining of nasal and pharyngeal mucosal smears were comparable with virus titres obtained by inoculation of chick-embryo cell cultures with the same material. Of a total of 326 pigs in field outbreaks, 187 showed clinical signs and the diagnosis was confirmed by FA tests on nasopharyngeal smears.
