During the international seminar on Family Planning Programmes in the 21st Century held in Bangladesh, a number of important issues were identified to guide the international population movement. Organized by the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population, the seminar reflected the Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development. It ascertained strategies to deliver family planning services within the broader context of reproductive health of women and men, such as safe motherhood, prevention and management of reproductive tract infections, and sexually transmitted diseases. In addition, over 50 experts reviewed experiences on participating countries to assess progress, make projections about future needs and demand for contraception, and to identify existing and future barriers to the implementation of family planning program activities. A total of 65 papers were also presented in nine scientific sessions that addressed certain issues, including South-South Collaboration for Family Planning Programmes in the 21st Century. Overall, the speakers indicated that a worldwide massive change is expected in terms of demographic transition over the 21st century.
