Lipid changes in central auditory pathway following streptomycin intoxication in rat

A study was carried out on the effect of streptomycin on the central auditory pathway in rats. Rats received streptomycin 30 mg/kg body weight im daily for 21 days. Levels of the lipid profiles (total lipids, phospholipids and cholesterol) were increased and corresponded with the inhibition of lipid peroxidation in all the centres except the auditory cortex where they remained unaltered. Interestingly, streptomycin treatment exhibited remarkable effect on the medial geniculate body. Reduced lipase activity was the probable mechanism of toxicity.
