The authors studied changes in the dog corticospinal tract 15, 25 and 35 days after ligation of the right middle cerebral artery. Segments C2, C7, T3, T7, L2 and L5 were sectioned on a freezing microtome and the sections were impregnanted by the Nauta-Gygax method. Pronounced degenerating were observed in the lower half of the dorsal horns of the spinal cord, in the intermediate zone and in the dorsal half of the ventral horns. Degenerating elements were present at all the levels investigated; they were far more numerous on the contralateral (left) side. The incidence of degenerating axons in the thoracic and lumbar part of the spinal cord was due to malacia, which affected part of the internal capsule and thereby also the axons originating in the area supplied by the anterior cerebral artery.
