Asthma from mosquito bites: a case report

The first case of wheezing caused by a mosquito bite is reported from the USA. Thirty-eight other adverse systematic reactions to mosquitoes have been reported. These allergic reactions may be caused by inhalations of scales or dust from the insect's body, the injection of venom or biting with deposition of salivary secretions. It is suggested that one of the 17 enzymes in the saliva of the mosquitoes is responsible for causing a bite reaction since the response is abolished if the salivary duct is cut.
