Replies received to a circular letter sent to all local authorities in the UK concerning their recreation provision for women and girls are appraised. An analysis of response by type of authority and geographical area is presented. On an authority basis the following: policy; specific staff/training; research; marketing; percentage of female users; creche provision; women/girls only activities; and other notable schemes, are highlighted for the London Boroughs, County Councils, Scottish Regional Councils, Borough Councils, District Councils, and the regions of Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland. Responses are then looked at on a geographical basis and conclusions drawn for each of the policy areas mentioned. In general, the vast majority of authorities have failed to recognize the need for women/girls recreation provision, with only a few taking positive action to combat barriers to participation.
