Gardnerella vaginalis & associated aerobic bacteria in nonspecific vaginitis

To study the etiologic role of G. vaginalis in women suffering from nonspecific vaginitis (NSV), 375 women clinically suspected to be suffering from this disease and 65 age-matched healthly women were investigated. G. vaginalis was present in the vagina of 32.43 per cent women and in 16.66 per cent controls. Quantitatively the organism was isolated in pure culture from 62.5 per cent patients and as a predominant organism in 37.5 per cent cases. Among the controls, however, G. vaginalis was not present as a pure isolate in any woman and the concentration of the organism isolated in the 3 healthly women was much lower than that in the patients. Detection of 'clue cells' can not be recommended as a diagnostic criterior of NSV as the percentage of fasle positives was very high in both the patients and controls. The other aerobic organisms isolated in NSV patients were Escherichia coli, Klebsiells pneumoniae and Staphylococcus albus in 21.62, 18.91 and 16.2 per cent respectively. Among the controls the commonest aerobes were S. albus and E. coli in 27.77 and 22.22 per cent respectively.
