Ixodid ticks collected in the Eastern Himalayas and their potential disease relationships

Collection data are given for 15 species of Ixodid ticks found in the eastern Himalayan region of India and Sikkim State at altitudes up to 3800 m between July 1966 and April 1967. Haemaphysalis bispinosaNeum. and Boophilus microplus(Can.) were taken on cattle, goats and dogs, and H. aponommoidesWarb., Ixodes acutitarsus(Karsch) and I. kaschmiricusSerdyukova on cattle. Dermacentor auratusSup. Amblyomma integrumKarsch, Hyalomma marginatum isaaciSharif, I. ovatusNeum. (japonensisNeum.) and A. testudinariumKoch were taken on man, and the last two also on cattle and I. ovatusalso on goats. Rhipicephalus sanguineus(Latr.) and R. haemaphysaloidesSup. were taken on dogs and the former also on goats, and B. microplus, R. haemaphysaloidesand Haemaphysalis bispinosaon horses and sometimes also on mules. I. acutitarsus, I. ovatusand H. bispinosawere taken on sheep (all in Sikkim). H. cornigeraNeum. D. auratusand A. testudinariumwere taken on small mammals. H. papuana kinneariWarb, and H. wellingtoniNutt. & Warb. as well as some of the above species, were taken by dragging. H. cornigerawas recorded for the first time from the area surveyed. R. haemaphysaloides, L ovatus, L kaschmiricusand H. aponommoideswere recorded for the first time from Sikkim, and the last two and I. acutitarsuswere not found elsewhere during the survey. D. auratus, A. integrum, Hyalomma m. isaaci, Haemaphysalis wellingtoni, H. p. kinneariand R. sanguineuswere not found in Sikkim,. The ecological characteristics of the areas surveyed and the disease relationships of the various species in other parts of the world are reviewed.
