Parallel double-blind clinical trial of nifedipine versus a placebo in patients with chronic cerebrovascular insufficiency

Patients (40) with symptoms of chronic cerebrovascular disease were assessed according to a double-blind parallel protocol with nicardipine vs. placebo as study medications. Forty-one patients were recruited (26 males and 15 females). The medium age was 83 yr. The subjects were divided in 2 groups (nicardipine and control groups) and received treatment for 8 wk. At the end of the study the final assessment showed that nicardipine had higher therapeutical efficacy than placebo in the treatment of the following clinical symptoms: fatigue, anorexia, dizziness, mood, emotional state, memory, self initiative and others. According to the x2 test that difference was, in some instances, statistically significative. In all cases the clinical and biological tolerance was excellent.
