Effect of fasting and subsequent specific diets on jejunal mucosa in rat

Effect of fasting and subsequent feeding with normal and specific diets was studied in 20 Albino rat. Fasting for six days leads to marked reduction in height of villi, depth of crypts and epithelial cell height. Referring with normal diet for 8 days increases height of villi, but it doesn't reach the normal value; there is no change in crypt size as compared to fasting while epithelial cell height is restored to normal. With lipid or carbohydrate diet for 8 days similar findings were observed. However protein diet for 8 days leads to maximum increase in height of villi as compared with normal diet and lipid or carbohydrate diet; depth of crypt remained unchanged while epithelial cell height was not only restored to normal but was significantly increased as compared to normal.
