An ELISA [enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay] was used for demonstration of serum antibodies to M. hominis. Specific IgG antibodies were detected in 28 (82%) of 34 patients with acute salpingitis and in 22 (45%) of 49 female blood donors, whereas all of 15 children between 15-25 mo. of age yielded negative results. Of the 34 patients with acute salpingitis, 4 showed a 4-fold or greater rise or fall in M. hominis ELISA IgG antibodies, and 2 of the 4 patients also had detectable M. hominis IgM antibodies. One of the 4 patients had a concurrent chlamydial infection.
