The aim of this study was to evaluate sensitivity to different chemotherapeutic agents of M. hominis strains isolated from healthy men and those suffering from gonnorrhea, postgonococcal urethritis (PGU) and nongonococcal urethritis (NGU) and from their sexual partners. Two hundred and four M. hominis strains were invovled in the study: 22 strains isolated from gonnorrhea patients, 24 strains from PGU patients, 79 strains from NGU patients, 31 strains from healthy men and 48 strains isolated from sexual partners of PGU and NGU patients. Sensitivity tests of M. hominis strains to different chemotherapeutics were performed in liquid media. M. hominis strains showed lower sensitivity to antibiotics than Ureaplasma. The most active against Mycoplasma appeared to be oxytetracycline and chloramphenicol. Erythromycin, rifampicin and sulphamethoxazole with trimethoprim had no activity against Mycoplasma tested. The growth of M. hominis strains was inhibited by oxytetracycline at the concentration 0.117-60.0 mg/l and doxycycline 0.007-15.0 mg/l of medium. MIC90 values for those two antibiotics were 3.946 and 0.580 mg/l respectively. Forty one (23%) M. hominis strains had decreased sensitivity to oxytetracycline (1.5-60.0 mg/l of medium) and 24 strains (13.5%) to doxycycline (7.5-15.0 mg/l). The highest sensitivity to oxytetracycline and doxycycline was found among Mycoplasma strains isolated from healthy individuals (MIC90 = 0.045 and 0.042 mg/l medium respectively) and in the decreasing order of sensitivity from PGU, NGU patients and their sexual partners. The most resistant strains of M. hominis were isolated from gonnorrhea patients (MIC90 = 10.824 and 1.006 mg/l). Detection of M. hominis with low sensitivity to oxytetracycline and doxycycline indicates an increase in resistance of those microorganisms to the antibiotics so far of choice in the treatment of mycoplasmal infections.
