The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of occurrence of serological types of U. urealyticum among strains isolated from healthy men and patients suffering from gonorrhea, postgonococcal urethritis (PGU), nongonococcal urethritis (NGU) and from their sexual partners. Six hundred and eleven U. urealyticum strains isolated from tested individuals were included into the study: 71 strains were isolated from gonorrhea cases, 84 from PGU, 299 from NGU, 63 strains from healthy controls and 94 strains from women-sexual partners of PGU and NGU patients. The study was also carried out on 69 U. urealyticum strains isolated from patients seen after treatment was accomplished. The most frequently isolated serotypes of U. urealyticum were: VIII (23,8%), III (20.7%), VI (16.0%) and IX (11.1%). The remaining serotypes did not exceed 8%. Type VIII was most frequently isolated from gonorrhea and NGU patients (32.6% and 27.9% respectively), type III from PGU patients and sexual partners of PGU and NGU men (21.3% and 38.4% respectively) and type VI from healthy controls (25.4%). Types VIII (31.3%), type IX (21.9%) and type III (15.6%) prevailed in young men under 20. On the other hand serotypes VI (29.0%), III (19.3%) and VIII and IX (each 12.9%) were most often isolated from men above 40 years of age. In this study no particular serological type of U. urealyticum was found to predominate as an etiological agent of urethritis.
