This community-based study was conducted on tribal populations in 3 panchayat samitis of Tribal Sub-Plan (TSP) area of Rajasthan, India to investigate the spread of STDs among the tribal population, to identify the sources of transmission, and to study the prevalent treatment methods used. Most of the tribal populations were aware of the symptoms of STDs, although they were not aware of the term STD. Of 180 participants, 36 sexually active men (n=17) and women (n=19) showed STD-related symptoms. The mainly reported source of STD was sexual relationship with persons other than spouses (multiple sexual partners). The rate contraceptive use was very low, and only 30% of those with STD-related symptoms understand the meaning of safe sex. Only 40% of men and 21% of women had consulted a physician for the treatment of their STDs, and most of them did not consider these infections as a major health concern.
