The uptake of 3H-cystine in the paramedial neurosecretory cell-pair (PNC) of the suboesophageal ganglion of T. commodus Walker (Insecta, Orthoptera) was determined by autoradiography. Observations were made at intervals from 15 min to 24h following injection of 3H-cystine. With paraldehyde fuchsin the PNC showed 3 staining intensities (light, moderate, dark). Their cellular and nuclear volumes were determined. Lightly stained PNC have on the average large cellular and nuclear volumes and they contain much label indicative of high rates of synthesis (and or release) of neurosecretory material. By contrast darkly stained PNC have small cellular and nuclear volumes; they contain small amounts of label indicative of low rates of synthesis (and of discharge) of neurosecretory material. Moderately stained PNC are intermediate with regard to their 3H-cystine uptake and cellular and nuclear volumes.
