Inhibitory effect on endocytosis in polymorphonuclear cells caused by thalidomide

Thalidomide is a useful drug in the treatment of the reactional lepromatous leprosy, but the mode of action of this drug is unknown. For this reason we studied the phagocytic function of polymorphonuclear cells in the presence of thalidomide. Our own results show that this drug diminishes phagocytosis in vitro. This finding suggests that suppression of phagocytosis might contribute to the antiinflammatory effects of thalidomide.
