Prognostic value of brainstem auditory evoked responses in coma due to stroke

The relative value of the Glasgow coma scale (GCS), cold-caloric response and brainstem auditory evoked responses (BAERs) as prognostic indicators, both in relation to clinical examination and to each other in 15 patients comatosed as a result of stroke has been evaluated. The results indicated that as compared to auditory evoked potentials, a good bed side clinical examination (GCS) was found to be a slightly better prognosticator of the outcome of coma in stroke patients. The most reliable parameter was the cold caloric response. BAER abnormality in a large majority of comatose patients due to stroke, pointed to a significant involvement of subcortical structures in addition to the primary site of pathology.
